This is how it all began . . . A letter was received from a prospective customer along with a sketch that stated:
The drawing depicted a machine that operated by rotating
two large disks that are 18 degrees out of parallel with each other. The coupling is
needed to transmit torque from the shaft of one disk to the shaft of the other.
A low price was very important to the customer because the end product is a recreational
consumer product.
With coordination between the sales representative, the customer's engineer and Helical's Application Engineer, a design was created for a universal joint capable of 18 degrees of angular misalignment, sufficient torque, functionally smooth operation with the desired life. In our designing process, the engineers always take into consideration cost efficient production methods to keep the price as low as possible. It is important to obtain as much information pertaining to the application as possible and to advise the customer's design engineer how savings can be made in the finished HELI-CAL® Flexure. In addition to the customer's specifications, they were supplied a unit requiring no lubrication.
