A manufacturer of eye glass lens was using a British made grinder. The grinding surface was directly below the universal joint that allowed for rotation as well as axial motion. The severe atmosphere was caused by glass dust from the grinding operation. The universal joint could not be lubricated as oil was not allowed on the lens. Running the U-Joint 24 hours a day, the customer was only getting a life of 2 weeks before failure.
Through the coordination of the salesman, Helical Application Engineer, and the customer's design engineer, a universal joint was designed that allowed for 18 degrees of angular misalignment plus the capability to extend an additional 4 inches in length. The assembly Helical produced gave them months of production without downtime for maintenance of the universal joint. It was a definite cost saving unit for them.
