FLEXURE FACTS

Solved Application Story # 14

MANUFACTURING - Semi-conductor

THE CHALLENGE

 This story started with:

"The customer is designing a machine to inspect silicon chip wafers and
they need to be able to rotate, tilt and orbit the wafer via a joystick
control. Basically, the flexure would be required to angularly bend
through 30 degrees, but they require the minimum torsional wind-up we
can offer. The material would have to be stainless steel."

Several different means of transmitting this motion had been tried, but failed due to lack of positioning accuracy attributable to either backlash or torsional flexibility. There were almost daily Faxes and telephone calls to the international representative as well as direct contact with the customer. Design and production were pushed to the limit to supply samples of finished parts.

THE SOLUTION

Meeting the customer's requirements under time constraints caused additional design and production pressures. The final configuration met the specifications plus gave the life expectancy they wished. With Helical's ability to resolve the strict requirements in a timely manner, the customer was able to obtain the big order they were trying for.

THE ANSWER

HELI-CAL Flexured Universal-Joint # 9499X1
