A specialty machine manufacturer designing an orange juice packaging machine had some out-of-the-ordinary misalignment requirements. The universal joint needed to compensate for 6 degrees on each side of center and at the same time extend and compress a quarter of an inch. These movements were needed while filling the containers with juice. The customer was unable to find a coupling or u-joint to allow for all of these misalignments at the same time.
In the final design, it was possible for the coupling to allow 12 degrees angular (six degrees in each mode) and three-fourths total movement (three-eighths in each mode). There are two couplings used on each machine, oscillating and rotating in opposite directions.
