In the treatment of waste water in ponds and small lakes, "aerators" are used to stir and force air into the water to help in its purification. The most common "aerator" draws air down the propeller shaft to the propeller where it mixes with the water. The "cardan style" u-joint that was being used restricted the air flow; therefore, the efficient flow of air was limited.
The Helical coupling allows air to be drawn through the flexure and then down the shaft to the propeller which is stirring the water. The coupling also supported the propeller shaft at the motor end, eliminating the need for a bearing.
