FLEXURE FACTS

Solved Application Story # 23

INDUSTRIAL/MANUFACTURING - Laser Machining Center

THE CHALLENGE

A customer familiar with Helical couplings had ordered an MC7100 coupling for a Laser Machining Center. After installing the coupling, the customer discovered a focusing problem with the laser. It was determined the problem resulted from the coupling becoming magnetized in the machine which was disturbing the concentrated light beam.

THE SOLUTION

An aluminum coupling was unacceptable because of torsional stiffness requirements. Making a special coupling of non-magnetic 300 series stainless steel to the same dimensions as an MC7100 coupling allowed us to meet all the customers needs. Non-magnetic stainless steel screws were used to keep the unit completely non-magnetic.

THE ANSWER

HELI-CAL
® Flexure Flexible Shaft Coupling # 6959
