Project involved a universal joint with the requirement to
operate at 15 degrees angular misalignment, 50,000 RPM, with a life of 120,000,000 cycles.
The method originally used failed to give the desired life and smoothness in operation.
The end product is a Surgical Bone Saw.
Helical's application engineer, working with the customer's
design engineer, was able to reduce the number of parts on the original design. This
allowed the customer to improve his finished product and make it easier for the surgeon to
use. The final design is made complete in a single homogeneous piece of 17-4pH stainless
steel material.
The testing program consisted of 15 degree angular misalignment, 45,000 RPM with a
complete cycle of: ON 10 seconds - OFF 10 seconds. This cycling was done 108,000 times,
giving a life of at least 810,000,000 cycles.
