Operation of a gate valve on the Head Box (device that guides pulp) was originally designed using a hand crank to regulate the opening of the slice. As machines were designed for faster speeds, the hand crank was too slow for changing the thickness of the paper sheet. In order to accomplish the task of moving the sheet faster, the slice was changed to sectional drives along the width of the sheet. The thickness is not constant along the head box opening as there is a tendency for more pulp to come through the middle of the head box than the outer edges, thus the paper thickness is inconsistent. When changing the thickness of the sheet being manufactured, quick changes to the slice opening must be made.
A standard HELI-CAL® Flexure was proposed, but was manufactured from 316 stainless steel (CRES), because of the high water and bleaching chemicals coming out with the pulp. This coupling out-performed the competitors for the duration in which it was required to operate.
