A repair and maintenance company called asking for help in replacing a U-joint that the manufacturer was using on its original equipment. Using over a period of time, there was wear in the multiple piece unit which caused backlash, increased maintenance, and reduced efficiency; smooth operation of the equipment was lost. It was a retrofit application; therefore, the new unit had to fit into the allocated space, and provide 30 degree angular misalignment capability. There were two U-joints on each unit, with a single motor in the middle, which means each end rotated in opposite directions.
To reduce the stress level because the U-joints operated in opposite directions, the HELI-CAL Flexures were generated with left hand and right coils. This allowed the HELI-CAL® Flexure to always operate in the windup condition. One end was pinned in place, while the other has a quick disconnect attachment. To assure the unit would not disengage while in operation, the slots were machined to prevent this from happening. Ease of installation, low maintenance, requiring no lubrication was enough of an incentive for the R.M.O. company to purchase hundreds of these U-joints. There was a repair and maintenance shop on both the West and East coast. It is natural when an application has been solved in the field to go to the original manufacturer to offer our solution, however, they were not interested.
