This application is on a small animal respirator where a linear drive is moving a piston back and forth supplying air to an animal. In an attempt to lower cost, the customer went to less precise parts and increased tolerances. However, this resulted in greater misalignments which increased maintenance frequency and decreased machine life. The customer wanted to have a flexible component using no lubrication as contamination was also a concern.
Instead of the coupling rotating and transmitting torque, as with most coupling applications, this situation required a component with necessary axial and radial compliance. The radial flexibility had to be low enough for the Flexure to compensate for the misalignment between the drive and the piston. At the same time, it needed to be axially stiff to accurately transmit the back and forth motion. By locating the coupling next to the piston, it allowed the linear drive to move freely with no wear on the piston. Since the Helical coupling does not require lubrication, the customer's contamination concern was also resolved.
