An existing customer had used the HELI-CAL® Flexure in many unique situations. The function of this application is to administer medication through multiple syringes for lab research. These syringes are held in place by a clamp, fluid is then pushed through them by a slide driven with a lead screw. It was discovered that there was binding between the slide and its support rails causing uneven flow of medication and inaccurate readouts of the amount administered.
The customer determined they needed compliance in the rail
supports to allow for variations in spacing between the parallel rails that caused the
slide to bind. A Helical coupling sample was given to the customer and installed at the
end of each rail. Testing of the coupling proved the flexure had sufficient radial
stiffness to support the weight of the rail and slide, and flexible enough to prevent them
from binding.
This solution was used for a variety of drives ranging from two to ten syringes. This is
another example of using a Helical coupling in applications other than to transmit
torque.
