In a machine used to slice bits of frozen specimens
for microscope slides, the customer was attaching two shafts with two couplings and two
universal joints. To accomplish this slicing a hand wheel is used to position a linear
transducer.
In the prior system the customer was attaching a coupling that allowed five (5) degrees of
angle, and at the opposite end of the shaft a universal joint capable of twelve (12)
degrees of misalignment. There are two different shaft lengths used in this instrument.
With the international representative sending information and drawings from the customer to show details of the system, Helical's Application Engineer was able to design units that met the two requirements. Normally, when the angular misalignment is five degrees we call it a flexible coupling, when the misalignment is above seven degrees it is a universal joint. Here, we have both within the same HELI-CAL® Flexure. Instead of six pieces to be assembled, the customer now has a smoother operation with only two Helical U-J's.
