A customer called - "Can you help us?". Their customer was accusing them of supplying them with a poor grade of wrapping film. The knife used was unable to cut through the wrap material. What was being used was a "U"- shaped knife, the same shape as the pull tab to open a package of cigarettes. The knife was attached to a solid shaft holder, which had to be adjusted constantly to keep the cutting edge perpendicular to the roller. The machine operated 24 hours a day, at the rate of 180 packages per minute. The normal life obtained from this knife was one month, then it had to be replaced.
The knife portion had to be of a material that would hold a sharp edge. The shaft was made from 17-4pH heat treated stainless steel. Our customer was unable to supply Helical with the force that was needed to cut the film. It was necessary for several samples to be supplied for the customer to test and evaluate on the actual machinery. The proper HELI-CAL® Flexure was finally found. While visiting the Italian manufacturer of the packaging machine, they wanted to know what material was used for the knife. It was the same material used with the original solid stemmed knife. Thus, it was the HELI-CAL Flexure that was improving the life of the knife from one month to 10-12 months.
