THE CHALLENGE
This application came from the aircraft industry. The customer needed an
answer to a short cycle life. The tang end bent on a wire wound clutch was
unable to withstand the high forces involved causing the unit to fail when
the tang broke off. Helical was called, "Can you help?" THE SOLUTION
The HELI-CAL®
Flexure is a machined part, no bending of material, therefore, no
additional stresses are put into the end product. There were two methods
of reducing stress levels; (I) producing the tang with more material in
the tang and (2) radius the point where the tang connects to the end coil.
