ONE-PIECE FLEXURES
as couplings, U-joints, or precision springs

SANTA MARIA, CA., January 23, 1997
One-piece HELI-CAL Flexures with equal outside diameters and made from
the same material demonstrate different performance characteristics with the variation of
a single design parameter.
The red flexures shown are similar to each other in OD, ID, length and
number of coils. Changing coil thickness will change torque, angularity (bending moment),
parallel misalignment (radial load), torsional stiffness and compression spring rate. The
green flexures are identical in OD, length, number of coils and coil width. By making the
ID either smaller or larger, the designer can effect the same changes as noted in the red
flexures. The blue flexures all match except for an increase in the number of coils.
Torque capability remains the same, but all other characteristics change.
Performance characteristics change at different rates dependent upon
which feature is changed. By changing the material component, even greater variations are
possible. The flexures help solve many design problems, because the coils have flexing
qualities that compensate for angular, parallel or skewed misalignment, provide axial
motion, constant velocity and maintain smooth bearing loads. Also, customers may specify
the shape and style of attachment interface with the flexure. For example, bores may be
round, splined, threaded or D shaped.
