FLEXIBLE SHAFT COUPLING TECHNOLGY USED IN PRECISION MACHINED SPRING MANUFACTURE
SANTA MARIA, CA., June 4, 1997 The well known HELI-CAL Flexure, (flexible helical beam), concept is being used in industrial coupling applications to transmit torque between misaligned shafts. Helical Products Company, Inc. is applying its flexible coupling, helical beam, know-how to the design and manufacture of especially high performance, precision machined springs. This applied technology removes much of the guesswork and trial and error usually associated with precision springs. Performance of the Helical precision machined spring has proven to be predictable and repeatable while meeting dimensionally tight tolerances. Most engineers are familiar with traditional spring products. But they generally are not familiar with Helicals use of the flexible helix beam, "flexure," as a torsion, tension or compression spring. HELI-CAL Flexure technology"machined from one piece of metal or other material," etc.applies directly to machined springs. A specific advantage of this technology is that it enables customer specified end-attachments to be integrated into a single machined spring component. Common attachments that require multiple pieces in competing products include clamps, tangs, flanges or threaded ends. Such attachment features, integrated with the HELI-CAL Flexure, can have a marked impact on system performance and often mean increased production efficiencies and significant cost savings. Helical Products Company is a custom design and manufacturing firm that utilizes the HELI-CAL Flexure concept, a helical beam that can be configured to provide precise torsional, tension and compression spring operating characteristics. A variety of materials can be used, including aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and plastics.
