MARTIAN SPRINGS
SANTA MARIA, CA., July 15, 1997--Gary Boehm, senior research engineer at Helical Products Company, Santa Maria, CA., displays one of the deployment springs his company developed for suspending the Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) device used on NASA's Mars rover Sojourner. Springs are machined from a single piece of metal into rectangular shaped coils, a configuration that provides exceptionally precise operational performance. Use of machined springs enables designers to alter coil, size, and number to achieve mathematically specified, different, elastic rates.
